Challenges Facing Villa Somalia
When President Hassan Sheikh was elected in 2022, the political environment was relatively prepared, or at least willing, for elections in the FMS of Southwest, Galmudug, Jubbaland, and Hirshabelle, all of which had limited time remaining in their mandates but were still open to negotiation.
Over the past four years, relations between Villa Somalia and the federal member states have largely been characterized by mistrust, fear, and political disagreements. Today, it has become increasingly difficult to implement Villa Somalia’s political agenda nationwide without the risk of tensions escalating into violence.
There is an ongoing debate regarding the scope of the President’s authority and the broader mandate of the federal government. President Hassan Sheikh appears to be gradually losing long standing allies who once struggled alongside him, many of whom now reject his style of leadership, political vision, and approach to governance, viewing it as overly centralized and shaped by his personal direction.
Security and stability are not fixed achievements, they require constant protection and careful management. Somalia remains a heavily armed, clan based society where weapons are widespread and political disputes can quickly escalate.
Many pressing national priorities are being overshadowed, particularly issues concerning the country’s unity and sovereignty. If the current disputes continue and new disagreements keep emerging without meaningful compromise, the political challenges facing Somalia may deepen further.
