A6: The kids who crave belonging are not going to explicitly ask for it or show you they want it through their behaviors. Be creative, consistent, & gentle when seeking Ss out. The disengaged Ss NEED to be seen. Oh and "it takes a village" now more than ever! #PASCDchat

A7: To be honest, going slower has been so helpful. I want to remember this before filling up my (and my family's) calendar just because we can! #pascdchat

A6: I’m a big believer in no academics for the first week. We have got to take time to build trust, relationships and make sure students are emotionally ready for academics before we can begin #pascdchat

A dear colleague and @MCDPEL classmate of mine who leads a PK program did the same thing. She actually handmade tee shirts for all of her Ts and delivered them. #PASCDChat

A5: My daughter's elem school made a video of all the teachers and staff with how they spend their time- it was creative connection btwn them AND great for Ss to see! #pascdchat

It breaks the myth of the context-neutral mindset and makes explicit some of the real life that goes on in the worlds of our students when they are also trying to "do school." #pascdchat

Q5: At the beginning of every staff meeting there is an announcement of staff "Good news!" that is shared. The same rockstar who organizes it when in the brick & mortar created a PPT to share with pictures and updates from everyone who wanted to submit. #PASCDchat

It's also the appreciation by Ss and Ts of the value of interaction. I think that all of us often forget the importance and basic needs satisfaction of just having regular interactions with each other and this situation has made that importance & appreciation so stark! #PASCDChat

A5: Working hard to do this daily. Attending every PLT, mailing out postcards, giving grace and making ourselves available. Realizing that to get out of this ahead, we have to do it together. #pascdchat

Agreed. Just like in a traditional classroom, we need to meet students where they are at and help move them forward. This includes helping build comfort with virtual learning spaces. @TMus_Ed mentioned one on one conferences, for example. #PASCDChat

A4.c: These virtual home visits also create or require vulnerabilities from our Ss and often their families. Feeling cared for and accepted when vulnerabilities are exposed or heightened also strengthens relationships. #PASCDChat

I think this way of teaching makes those who ARE disengaged more apparent to me. I also think Ss are more comfortable self-advocating through a screen. It's less pressure and they are not perceived as singled out. #PASCDchat

A4.b: moreover, in the context of live online sessions, it has literally given us a window into our Ss homes. In some ways, it is like doing home visits on whole classrooms of Ss on multiple different days and times. Home visits have huge impacts on connectedness. #PASCDChat

A4: This forced shift has caused, if not required, close looks at barriers to access for some Ss & given us insights into lives outside of school that we may not have truly seen before. This improved understanding opens doors to relationships with Ss #PASCDchat

I had such a great 1to1 with one of my former Scholars this week. It made my week! It was a gamechanger for us both because we were able to relate and share. #pascdchat

A4: It may be that some Ss feel like they have btr boundaries. Thus, they are more willing to be engaged when not directly in front of others. Reminds me of when quiet Ss would write vols on a blog! #pascdchat

A4: Traditional school doesn’t work.... we have now given kids the ability for flexible seating, the ability to complete work on their time, no dress codes, and the ability to eat and go to the bathroom when they want. Are we surprised? #PASCDchat

A4: Some of our Scholars are disillusioned by the fact that we provide a safe and welcoming space for them to thrive. Remote Learning is a shift in how we are able to relate. Makes it hard 2 stay engaged and inspired. #PASCDchat
