Just because you have irregular menstrual cycles does not mean you have PCOS. Abnormal menstrual cycles have been quite common, especially in our high-stress, workaholic US environment. But just because it’s common does not mean it’s normal. A woman may lose her cycle for a reason not related to high testosterone and yet be thrown into the PCOS box. This is why the PCOS diagnosis can be very troublesome. It pretty much puts women in a box that they may not fit in. The other issue is that there are specific “PCOS diets” or “PCOS protocols” for women diagnosed with PCOS to follow. But there are many different forms of PCOS and one dogmatic way isn’t going to fix it all. Going back to what I had said above. Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA) is often misdiagnosed as PCOS in many cases. This HA is an issue where your hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis gets suppressed due to reasons like stress, under-eating, over-exercising, or nutrient deficiencies. Now no matter what’s going on.
