SCOTLAND NETWORK PIR UPDATE - POSITIVE DEVELOPMENTS
THE CWU AT EVERY LEVEL HAVE BEEN ENGAGED IN DISCUSSIONS UNDER THE POST IMPLEMENTATIONNETWORK REVIEW TO SEE IF THEREWAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO MOVE START TIMES EARLIER.
This is despite the fact that lots of mail centres are experiencing more work arriving then later in the night than planned and in some plants this is impacting on quality.
Despite this concern, constructive talks between Alistair Cochrane Royal Mail Chief Operating Officer and Martin Walsh Deputy General Secretary (Postal) have reached the following way forward:
1. From Saturday 30th November 2024. All Delivery Offices servedby the Edinburgh Mail Centre will start and finish 20 minutes earlier each Saturday.
2. To assist this happening there will 20 four night duties deployedin the mail centre which will finish at 08:00 to assist with the work arriving later into Edinburgh Mail Centre.
3. The above will be reviewed after 8 weeks under the next PIR.
4. There will be the opportunity for 17 Aberdeen Postcode Delivery Units to discuss moving start and finish times earlierapart from on a Monday. Work is already underway on this.
5. We agreed that Glasgow Mail Centre will receive a new parcelsorting machine in early 2025 which will assist in the flow in work into the Glasgow Delivery Catchment Area in time for the next PIR.
The above is a step in the right direction for Scotland but it also allows both Royal Mail and the CWU the opportunity to improve the flow of work intoScotland ahead of the next Network review of start and finish times from 20th January.
I want to thank Davie Robertson, Tony Bouch, the Scottish Divisional Reps, theScotland No 2 Reps and in particular the Area Processing and shift reps in Edinburgh Mail Centre.
I said when I met all the Scottish reps in Perth in September we would find away to start reducing the impact of later starts and we have made the first step in doing this. This is just the beginning.
We now all need to focus on working to improve the network across Scotlandto ensure we can improve start and finish times from late January 2025.
We are also pleased to report that talks are progressing which will hopefully lead to further gains in the following areas:
Hereford and Worcester area
Several units in South Wales
Multiple units in South East Division
SE London
SW London
CWU officials are working across the UK on this issue to bring about further gains. Thank you to everyone involved.
MARTIN WALSH
Deputy General Secretary (Postal)
