A few days ago I posted about one of my latest acquisitions for my own Goodwin Presidential Library — specifically “George Washington’s Rules of Civility” authored by the Founding Father himself and autographed by the person who translated the book into French and back to English. Now, at the request of one of my junior high school teachers and lifelong family friend, I will share some of Washington’s Rules of Civility, starting with the first two. 1) “Every action done in company ought to be with some sign of respect to those that are present.” 2) “When in company, put not your hands to any part of the body that is not usually discovered.” Washington - with whom I share both a first name and birthday - has a significant presence in my collection along with Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, JFK, and Nixon. These books add to my expanding personal library collection of 900 autobiographies, biographies, and history books about the U.S. Presidents. Here are two of today’s acquisitions for my own Goodwin Presidential Library: “Being Nixon: A Man Divided” — by Evan Thomas “Barack Obama: The Story” — by David Maraness “A Promised Land” — an autobiography by President Obama President Nixon — due to his lengthy public career as a twice-elected President, 2-term Vice President, and previously a U.S. Senator and Congressman, and longtime foreign policy savant even after his White House years — has a significant presence in my collection — along with Washington, Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, and JFK. (He is also the first Chief Executive I corresponded with as a youth.) As for President Obama, I had the honor and privilege of meeting and knowing him personally years before he was elected President, and had the opportunity to speak with him privately and publicly on multiple political and official occasions. (It is my plan to include those anecdotes among a recounting of my many Forrest Gump-like experiences in my own autobiography one day!) Over this past weekend I found at a local vintage shop another tome for the Lincoln portion of my library: “Reelecting Lincoln: The Battle for the 1865 Presidency” by John C. Waugh. The author signed it in 1998. These books add to my expanding personal library collection of 890 autobiographies, biographies, and history books about the U.S. Presidents. Here is today’s acquisition for my Goodwin Presidential Library: The complete 8-volume set of “The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln,” accompanied by a bound Index and published in 1955. This set adds to my expanding personal library collection of 800 autobiographies, biographies, and history books about the U.S. Presidents. Some of these curated books starting from my youth through the present are designated as antique due to their publication dates, the oldest in my library going back to circa 1819. For those who enjoy reading, the personal library at home is a joy, though utmost care has to be taken to save books from moisture, termites, other weather conditions. There is a way to reach top and pick up books, though, not visible in photo. In literary cities like Bhopal and Lucknow, that have a history of bibliophiles, it is common to find people maintaining their personal library with great effort. There are still hundreds of thousands of books that haven't made it to Google or other online platforms. Due to privacy concern, not sharing info but many would be able to recognise. I have been posting other good collections and also posted pictures of my own two separate collections in different cities and library in the past. PS: It's a passion or hobby just like other joys. If one doesn't like reading or collecting books, it is also equally good and he or she may have other hobby.
