An EMPOWERED CONSUMER is the best standards Inspector!
–
@UNBS Public Relations Officer, Ms Sylvia Kirabo, at the National Symposium on Consumer Protection & Competition Regulation on March 26th, 2026, organised by
@ucpaUG,
@MTICUg, @MMAKSAdvocates & @ADLegal.
Currently,
@UNBS has 4,000 locally manufactured products certified to carry Q- & S- marks, i.e. confirmed to meet standards.
However, it was noted that after acquiring the UNBS marks, some producers abandon the standards but continue to carry the quality marks on their products.
While
@UNBSug inspection & surveillance teams can uncover such products, the final line of inspection is the consumer.
This is a big responsibility, especially as most consumers do not know the standards, & when they do, have no technical competence to verify if products meet them. A simple and readily available source of consumer information, which consumers often ignore, is the
#productlabelling.
Check for:
✅Expiry & Manufacturing dates are readable & valid.
✅Product information, i.e. name, ingredients, instructions for use, and storage
✅Manufacturer’s name & address
✅Packaging condition: Are seals and packaging intact? No rust/ leakage? Signs of tampering?
✅Product appearance: Do colour, smell, and texture look ok? Especially food, medicine, cosmetics …
✅Price: If extremely low, it may be counterfeit, substandard, or expired
If a product does not meet any of these standards, do not buy it, or return it to the seller, and if unsatisfied, call
@UNBSug.
