Some People Never Retire from Engineering Today I spent a few hours with an engineer whose passion for metallurgy, mechanical testing, welding, materials, and quality has remained unchanged despite decades in the profession. Walking through a workshop surrounded by shelves of old textbooks, rare technical references, standards, manuals, research papers, and industry knowledge collected over a lifetime was a reminder that true engineering is far more than a profession—it is a way of life. What impressed me most was not the collection itself, but the mindset behind it. While many people count the days to retirement, some continue learning, questioning, teaching, and solving problems simply because they love the craft. Their motivation is no longer a paycheck; it is the satisfaction of understanding a problem, sharing knowledge, and helping industry improve. We spent hours discussing metallurgy, quality, engineering ethics, failures, inspections, workmanship, and lessons learned from real projects. The depth of practical knowledge gained from decades of hands-on experience cannot be found in textbooks alone. It comes from seeing what works, what fails, and why. The conversation reinforced something I have always believed: engineering judgment is built through curiosity, discipline, integrity, and a lifelong commitment to learning. Age may slow the body, but passion keeps the mind sharp. Many young engineers possess energy and ambition. The best among us combine that energy with the wisdom, patience, and perspective earned through experience. Today was a reminder that technical excellence is not measured by age, titles, or positions. It is measured by the willingness to keep learning, keep contributing, and keep caring about doing things right. Some people work in engineering. Some people live engineering. I left inspired. #Metallurgy #MechanicalEngineering #MaterialsEngineering #WeldingEngineering #QualityControl #QualityAssurance #EngineeringEthics #EngineeringLeadership #OilAndGas #Manufacturing #Inspection #ContinuousLearning #ProfessionalEngineering #MaterialsScience #EngineeringExcellence #KnowledgeSharing #WorkEthic #IndustrialEngineering #LifelongLearning #EngineeringLife

To every Engineer in Training. Past and present. Imagine you are fresh out of school. You have taken engineering law. You know what statutory duty means and you know it is not optional. You are assigned as Project Engineer under a Professional Engineer and Project Manager. You are in meetings. The project plans on the table are unlawful. You know this. There are court rulings that directly prohibit what is being proposed. The people in that room know it too. Your P.Eng Project Manager proceeds anyway. You keep your mouth shut. Years pass. Things turn out badly.... as unlawful things tend to do. And then one day you sit down to write your Professional Practice exam. Read that again slowly. This is not a hypothetical. This is happening right now, inside firms you know, on projects you may be working on today, to people you know. Just within the last few months, a brilliant young woman not far from me walked away from a brand new engineering career rather than continue to participate in what she was being asked to do. I know two other young professionals who walked away for the exact same reason. One was assigned to an earth-filled dam where the engineering simply wasn't working, but corporate momentum pushed ahead anyway. The other was on a municipal landfill site.... They made their choices. It cost them their dreams, but not their values. And not their names. Do you own your name or do others own your name, your identity? Every individual makes choices. That is one of the central arguments of my book, Broken Trust. It does not matter what the culture of a firm is, what the local norms are, or who is telling you to proceed. The statutory duty belongs to you. In the end, your name is the only thing you ever truly own. Everything about statutory duty is riding on it. If you are struggling with where the line is; and many of you are, even if you won't say so publicly; look up the Royal Bank Letter, November/December 1990: The Soul of Professionalism. It was written for a different era but it describes exactly the crisis playing out in engineering firms today. The question it forces you to answer is the same one your Professional Practice exam will eventually ask; and the same one a court may one day ask as well: When you were in that room, and you knew, what did you do? And when the document came to you for authentication,,,, what did you do then? #ProfessionalEngineering #EngineeringEthics #StatutoryDuty #BrokenTrust #EIT #EngineeringLaw #PublicSafety

Why Professional Supervision Is Non-Negotiable Here The Nigerian National Building Code and regulatory expectations (including COREN requirements) emphasise the need for competent, registered professionals to supervise structural works. Site supervision is not a luxury, it is a fundamental requirement for compliance, quality assurance, and public safety. Effective supervision in the Nigerian and West African context involves: • Daily presence and systematic inspections at key stages • Material testing and verification (concrete cubes, steel tests, etc.) • Enforcement of hot-weather concreting procedures • Strict change control and documentation • Coordination with planning authorities and registered professionals • Early detection and correction of defects before they become permanent. Good engineering is not only about what is designed on paper.
It is also about ensuring the work is properly executed on-site in line with the design, the Nigerian Building Code, and international best practices adapted to our local conditions. Structural safety in Nigeria and West Africa depends on both sound design and disciplined execution. For developers, property owners, institutions, and government projects, engaging qualified COREN-registered structural engineers for independent supervision is one of the most effective ways to protect your investment, ensure compliance, and deliver buildings that stand the test of time. #Construction #StructuralEngineering #BuildingSafety #QualityControl #SiteSupervision #CivilEngineering #StructuralIntegrity #ConstructionDefects #ProfessionalEngineering
