Yesterday, I met a young woman who shared that she comes from an accounting background and is now learning data-related skills. It was an interesting conversation and a reminder of how people from different professions are finding their way into technology.
What stood out to me was the level of curiosity about my presence at the eventβquestions about how I got there, what program I was part of, what I do professionally, and why I was attending. At one point, there was even an insistence on continuing the conversation outside the event premises to ask more detailed questions.
At the same time, she was hesitation to share a professional LinkedIn profile or even participate in a simple photo. Everyone has the right to privacy, and I respect that. However, professional networking works best when there is mutual openness and respect.
As an engineer.
I don't usually approach professionals in other fields and interrogate them about their workplace, credentials, or activities. For example, I wouldn't walk into a hospital and start questioning doctors or nurses about their daily work .
Curiosity is valuable. Networking is valuable. But meaningful professional relationships are built on trust, transparency, and balanced conversationsβnot one-sided questioning.
