We’re excited to announce the final session of our five-part webinar series As we wrap up this series today, Session 5 titled “Evidence-Based Structured Pedagogical Approaches to Support Multilingual Learners” promises to be even more informative and empowering. Leading this final conversation is Professor Angeline Mbogo Barrett, a distinguished education researcher at the University of Bristol’s School of Education. With over a decade of experience teaching Physics and Mathematics in diverse contexts, including several years in secondary schools in Tanzania, Professor Barrett brings a wealth of practical and research expertise to the dialogue. Her work sits at the intersection of teacher learning, multilingual education, and culturally responsive pedagogy. She is particularly passionate about how secondary schools can become sites of scientific inquiry that blend indigenous knowledge systems with conventional school science to deepen understanding and engagement. Professor Barrett has spearheaded numerous research collaborations across East Africa aimed at developing language-supportive teaching practices and multilingual learning materials. Her recent projects include evaluating language-supportive approaches to transition at scale and strengthening secondary education through improved language-supportive teaching and textbooks in Tanzania. In this session, she’ll share practical, evidence-based strategies that help educators integrate language-supportive teaching, indigenous knowledge, and scientific inquiry to create inclusive classrooms where every learner thrives. #AREAi #AREAi4Africa #LearningWithoutBarriers #ProgramLaunch #FoundaMENTA #FoundationalLearning #QualityEducation #TeacherDevelopment #InclusiveEducation

Across classrooms, teachers play a crucial role in shaping how learning is measured and improved in classrooms. By leading the assessment of students' progress, teachers gain valuable insights that can inform their instruction, address learning gaps, and enhance foundational literacy and numeracy outcomes. Session 4 of the FLN Masterclass for Teachers will focus on how teacher-led assessments can transform learning experiences and support data-driven instruction in foundational learning contexts. Our guest speaker, Sarah Koko, Education Technical Lead at RTI International, has over ten years of experience working on large-scale and pilot education programs centred on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN). Passionate about education equity, Sarah's work aims to empower teachers and communities through evidence-based interventions that improve learning outcomes. Under her leadership, several initiatives have shown how assessment-informed instruction can directly impact literacy and numeracy gains among early-grade learners. In this session, Sarah will share practical insights on effectively implementing teacher-led assessments to track learning progress, guide instruction, and enhance overall classroom practice. Join us for this engaging conversation as we continue to advance the discussion on data-driven approaches that improve foundational learning outcomes. #AREAi #AREAi4Africa #LearningWithoutBarriers #ProgramLaunch #FoundaMENTA #FoundationalLearning #QualityEducation #TeacherDevelopment #InclusiveEducation

We’ve wrapped up Session 3 of our webinar series and it was all about bringing Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) lessons from curriculum to the classroom! This session guided educators through the process of translating curriculum standards into responsive, activity-based lessons that meet the diverse needs of every learner. Participants explored how to design lessons that are inclusive of all learners, regardless of ability, background, or language proficiency. Through practical demonstrations, they discovered how contextualized instructional materials, formative assessments, and learner-centered pedagogies can transform classrooms into truly inclusive and engaging spaces. The session also encouraged reflection on how the Luminous Fund’s principles of equity, inclusion, and evidence-based innovation can inform everyday teaching practices. It was a powerful reminder that inclusive, learner-centered classrooms are not just possible, but essential for every child to thrive. #AREAi #AREAi4Africa #LearningWithoutBarriers #ProgramLaunch #FoundaMENTA #FoundationalLearning #QualityEducation #TeacherDevelopment #InclusiveEducation

More insights from the second session of the Foundational Literacy & Numeracy (FLN) Masterclass for teachers, themed "Core Pedagogical Principles for FLN Excellence" Ramesh Chandra highlighted that effective teaching goes beyond routine instruction and rigid lesson delivery. When teachers adopt interactive and relational methods, learning becomes meaningful, dynamic, and joyful. He stressed the fact that children are more responsive in environments where they can communicate, collaborate, and connect rather than merely memorise information. The session had an indelible impact on participants as they were equipped with principles and strategies to build classrooms where learning is interactive, play-filled, and inclusive, and where every child’s voice, pace, and potential truly matter. #AREAi #AREAi4Africa #LearningWithoutBarriers #ProgramLaunch #FoundaMENTA #FoundationalLearning #QualityEducation

Teaching is both a science and an art, and today, we explored both! We just wrapped up the second session of the FLN Masterclass for Teachers, and it was nothing short of impactful! This session, themed “Core Pedagogical Principles for FLN Excellence,” was expertly facilitated by Ramesh Chandra, Director of Academics, Language and Learning Foundation (LLF), who guided participants through an in-depth exploration of what effective teaching in the foundational years truly means. Together, we examined the key principles of pedagogy, effective practices in foundational literacy and numeracy, and strategies for assessment and differentiated instruction. It was a rich, interactive, and thought-provoking session that emphasized the power of play, stimulating learning environments, and the use of mother tongue in the early years. We also explored how children’s emotional experiences shape their learning, engagement, and participation in the classroom. A huge thank you to every teacher who joined, shared insights, and made the session so interactive! 🙌🏽 We’d love to hear from you, what’s one key takeaway from today’s session that you’ll apply in your classroom? #AREAi #AREAi4Africa #LearningWithoutBarriers #ProgramLaunch #FoundaMENTA #FoundationalLearning #QualityEducation

“Students without FLN skills will struggle to learn.” This powerful reminder from Olubunmi Adefisayo, Director of Program Design & Pedagogy at Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) Africa, set the tone for Session 1 of the AREAi Foundational Literacy & Numeracy (FLN) Masterclass for teachers. The session deeply explored what it truly means to build strong learning foundations. In his words, “Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) form the essential basis of learning.” Without these skills, students find it difficult to progress academically or engage meaningfully in higher-order thinking. Mr Adefisayo emphasised that when learners cannot read with understanding or apply basic numeracy concepts, every other subject becomes a struggle. It is not merely about decoding words or recognising numbers; it’s about enabling comprehension, reasoning, and problem-solving. He further noted that “a lot of disengagement happens because people do not comprehend.” This statement resonated strongly with participants, highlighting the critical link between comprehension and classroom engagement. When children cannot make sense of what they read or hear, learning becomes a chore rather than an exciting journey. Another compelling takeaway was the focus on how children learn best — “Children learn by doing, and they learn when doing is fun.” Mr Adefisayo illustrated that true learning happens when education moves beyond rote memorisation into play, discovery, acting, and the use of manipulative materials. This approach not only strengthens retention but also nurtures curiosity, creativity, and confidence in learners. He also emphasised the need for teachers to equip themselves with specialised FLN skills, describing it as a necessary prerequisite for critical thinking and lifelong learning. Beyond individual classrooms, he encouraged educators to build communities of practice where they can share experiences, strategies, and collective support to help all children succeed. #AREAi #AREAi4Africa #LearningWithoutBarriers #ProgramLaunch #FoundaMENTA #FoundationalLearning #QualityEducation

What happens when teachers are equipped with global and practical knowledge about the foundations of foundational literacy and numeracy? They become catalysts for change, fostering confident learners, creating inclusive classrooms, and transforming the way children experience learning. When teachers understand how children learn to read, write, and develop basic numeracy skills, they can identify learning gaps early, tailor lessons to each child’s pace, and build the strong foundations necessary for lifelong learning. Today, we are excited to launch the first session of the FLN Masterclass for Teachers within our FoundaMenta community of practice. This is the first part of an enriched five-part webinar series designed to empower teachers with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to enhance teaching and learning for every child.with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to strengthen teaching and learning for every child. #AREAi #AREAi4Africa #LearningWithoutBarriers #ProgramLaunch #FoundaMENTA #FoundationalLearning #QualityEducation
