The newly released history of the 4602d Air Intelligence Service Squadron paints a different picture. According to the squadron's history, the 4602d was conducting field investigations of UFO reports across the United States. The document states that the squadron was responsible for carrying out field investigations of preliminary UFO reports under Air Force Regulation 200-2. Between August 1954 and June 1955, the 4602d received 306 preliminary UFO reports. Most were eventually explained, some required additional investigation. 60 cases were forwarded to the Air Technical Intelligence Center for further evaluation. 23 remained unknown after passing through the Air Force's own investigative process.
