A campaign by the Angling Trust and local anglers to overturn a council decision to ban fishing at a Derbyshire lake has received coverage on the BBC. North East Derbyshire District Council agreed on Monday to review their earlier decision not to renew Clay Cross Angling Association's five-year licence to fish at Wingerworth Lido, near Chesterfield. It's a huge step forward but we'll continue to support anglers in the fight to ensure fishing returns to the Lido. 🚨 Angling Trust leads fight to defend fishing at Wingerworth Lido The Angling Trust has called on Derbyshire councillors to overturn an “ideologically driven” ban on angling at Wingerworth Lido – a much-loved community beauty spot near Chesterfield. A motion is set to be debated on Monday 22 September that could reverse the ban and put the future of the Lido back into proper public consultation. In its briefing to councillors, the Angling Trust and Clay Cross Angling Club have strongly challenged claims made against anglers – showing that: 🎣 Club volunteers clear litter and protect the environment. 🦆 Ample space is left undisturbed for wildlife. 💧 The approved use of pond dye helps tackle damaging weed growth and algae. 🐟 Fish stocks are healthy and balanced. Martin Salter, Angling Trust Policy Chief, said: "The council processes were flawed, the public consultation virtually non-existent, and the reasons for banning Britain’s most popular outdoor sport taken with zero justification or evidence, save to satisfy those with an ideological hatred of angling. We have made a powerful case for the ban to be set aside and new plans drawn up for the future of Wingerworth Lido involving the whole community, including local anglers who have cared for this special place for generations.” 👉 Read the full story here: anglingtrust.net/2025/09/20/… #ProtectPromoteDevelop #AnglingTrust

Look Up It's Live! With power lines carrying voltages up to 132,000 volts, our trade partners Northern Powergrid is urging anglers to tackle safety before you set off: 👉 Look Up It’s Live! Take a good look around, behind, and above you. 👉 Stay away from the electricity network. 👉 Change your route to avoid power lines. 👉 Treat overhead cables as live and remember – electricity jumps gaps. 👉 Observe all warning signs. 👉 Carry your rod horizontally. 👉 Report near-misses with power lines. With a heatwave on the way, we want to remind anglers about the need to protect yourselves from the sun's harmful rays to avoid the risk of melanoma and other skin cancers. • Slap on sunscreen of at least Factor 30 before you go fishing. • Wear a cap or better still a wide-brimmed hat to protect eyes, head, face and neck. • Wear sunglasses - wraparound are best. • Where possible, fish in the shade or sit under an umbrella - especially between the hours of 11am-3pm. • Always take plenty of drinking water with you. You can download our 'Fishing in the Sun' advice here: anglingtrust.net/wp-content/… The Melanoma Fund has further information about how to protect yourself here: melanoma-fund.co.uk/ #MelanomaFund #ProtectPromoteDevelop #StaySafe

✅ Penny Gane of @fishlegal_ delivers the good news to Martin Smith, Honorary Secretary of the Pickering Fishery Association that they have won a court case mandating the UK government to clean up rivers nationwide. 💧 The Court of Appeal upheld a ruling that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) failed in its legal duty to protect waterways, specifically citing the pollution of the Upper Costa Beck in North Yorkshire. 🙌It's a huge win for rivers and anglers as this decision compels the government to implement specific measures to restore the health of rivers across the country. #EveryRiverCounts #AnglersAgainstPollution #fishlegal #anglingtrust #protectpromotedevelop

🌿 Jungle Rudd 🌿 "When that float goes under, that's what I live for" Alan Blair's ability to adapt to different fishing situations is why he's one of the best in the business. We followed Alan, on a day session in his home town, where he demonstrated he's just as at home with a float rod and a tub of maggots as he is with a Nash scope and a bag of boilies. What's your favourite method of fishing? Full film out this Sunday at 6pm on YouTube & our Facebook page #anglingtrust #protectpromotedevelop #floatfishing

⚠️ New data published today shows sewage spills continuing at an unacceptable rate ⚠️ "These pollution figures are, once again, highly disappointing. Both the water industry and environmental regulators are making ‘snail-paced’ progress in addressing this long-standing national scandal. It is evident that England’s wastewater infrastructure is not fit for purpose, and with water bills and investment rising steeply over the next five years, the public has a right to see a significant decrease in the volume of untreated sewage entering rivers and seas. Whilst it is encouraging to hear that the Environment Agency plans to increase the number of annual inspections from the current pitifully low figure of 800 to over 11,000 in the next two years, this effort will be largely pointless unless action is taken against polluting water companies operating in breach of their permits. Just 35 of last year’s 800 investigations are set to be taken forward to the next stage—hardly the tough legal deterrent that is needed, and has been promised by the government." 🧠🎣Young people turn to fishing for its anxiety-busting effects 🧠🎣 So say The Times.... Angling Trust ambassador, Amie Battams commented: “Three hours goes so fast on the river, and it’s such a buzz being outside,” she said. “That’s why young people like it, I think.” Jamie Cook CEO, Angling Trust said: “Since the Covid lockdowns, many young people have rediscovered the value of being outdoors, and angling provides the perfect way to escape screens, breathe fresh air, and engage with the natural world. Spending time by the water, surrounded by the countryside, has proven benefits for wellbeing and reducing stress.” Young or old, let us know why you go fishing in the comments. #anglingtrust #fishing #ProtectPromoteDevelop Link to the the full article: thetimes.com/uk/society/arti…

Major boost in the fight against pollution! We’re delighted to announce that Angling Direct will become a sponsor of our Anglers Against Pollution campaign. The partnership reflects Angling Direct’s commitment to help the angling community protect the UK’s waterways for the future of angling and the benefit of the whole community who enjoy being by the waterside. Angling Direct will provide essential support to the Angling Trust’s rapidly expanding Water Quality Monitoring Network, an innovative citizen science project which empowers anglers to monitor and report on water quality across England and Wales to provide critical data to address pollution. Since its launch in May 2022, the WQMN has enrolled anglers from 280 angling clubs who have conducted over 8,500 water quality tests on over 220 rivers across England and Wales, revealing the impact of pollution on freshwater ecosystems. A huge thank you to Angling Direct for their support!
