We don’t need spouses who just smile and look good but can’t hold an intellectual conversation or use soft diplomacy to advance our national security. What we need are capable spouses who, when asked by their foreign counterparts about South Africa, can confidently and diplomatically sell our country’s image in a way that upholds the dignity of the mission their husbands are leading and represents our nation well on global platforms. Every country has its own way of doing things, and that’s why we need spouses who can host diplomatic guests in a manner that respects their customs while adding a South African touch. This is exactly why it’s so important for them to go through this Protocol & Etiquette Training for Ministers’ spouses. It’s high time we start taking our country seriously. 🇿🇦
