🏛️🚨 Minnesota Fraud Claims Roil Congress as DOJ Referral Sought
During a January 7 House Oversight Committee hearing, Minnesota state representatives Kristin Robbins, Walter Hudson, and Marion Rarick testified that alleged fraud siphoned an estimated $9 billion from public programs, including child nutrition, housing for the disabled, and Medicaid. Lawmakers highlighted high-profile cases such as the $250 million Feeding Our Future scandal, which has resulted in 64 federal convictions.
The witnesses accused Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison of hindering investigations, reclassifying fraud to reduce scrutiny, and retaliating against whistleblowers—claims both offices have previously denied. Following the testimony, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna said she would refer Walz and Ellison to the Department of Justice for potential review.
In response, the Trump administration announced a new fraud-fighting role and temporary funding freezes pending audits. Democrats pushed back, calling the hearing partisan theater, and pointed to ongoing prosecutions, recoveries, and reforms as evidence of enforcement.
Federal authorities emphasized that investigations are ongoing and that allegations aired at the hearing do not constitute findings of guilt. The dispute underscores deep divisions over oversight, accountability, and the scale of fraud in public programs.
