When someone arrives in the UK claiming asylum and their criminal history cannot be independently verified, what is the Government actually doing to protect the public?
The recent incident in Northern Ireland is just the latest in a steady stream of headlines involving asylum seekers, refugees or recent arrivals being convicted of serious offences.
This is not a post about race, ethnicity or religion.
It is not a post about whether migrants commit more crime than people born in the UK.
It is a question about public protection, risk management and government policy.
Let's look at the facts.

A news article today featured a rape victim calling for a public, searchable database of sex offenders.
I'm genuinely torn on this one.
On one hand, where someone has been convicted of a serious sexual offence, especially one that could affect future partners, friends or associates, it is understandable to argue that people have a right to know.
On the other hand, rehabilitation matters too.
If someone receives a five-year prison sentence, serves that sentence, and then remains on a publicly searchable database forever, is that effectively a life sentence by another name?
We already have Claire's Law. We already have disclosure schemes relating to child sex offenders. Registered sex offenders are subject to ongoing monitoring and notification requirements, sometimes for life. Disclosure Scotland can also reveal relevant convictions to employers and organisations where appropriate.
Given all of those existing safeguards, I'm not entirely sure what a publicly searchable database would actually achieve in practice that the current system does not.
Would it genuinely make communities safer, or would it simply make it harder for people who have served their sentence to ever rebuild their lives?
I fully support public protection. But I also support the principle that punishment should have an end point, particularly when someone committed their offence at a very young age.
I'm genuinely interested in hearing both sides of this debate.

It is so disappointing that you can not debate with the left in the UK. Disagree with any of them and they call you names and attack, yet not a decent, coherent argument made in support of their ideas will be heard.
I was called "racist" by one of these intellectually challenged, shouty, hate filled, blue haired types a while ago.
She said my feed was full of racist, fascist evil.....
It isn't. Never has been. But it is full of things she didn't like, so in came the abuse and names.
What she found racist & facist:
!. Highlighting the high rate of violent sex crime offending by foreign nationals and pseudo asylum seekers.
2. Highlighting the national security risk of allowing undocumented and unvetted "illegal migrants", to remain in the UK.
3. Talking about the attack on women's rights and safety, by allowing men that call themselves women, to share women's spaces and take part in women's sport.
4. I discuss the different treatment of white British citizens, compared to ethnic minorities and foreign nationals in the criminal justice system.
5. I highlight examples of the dangers and prevalence of fundamental Islam, and its incompatebility with Western Judaeo-Christian civilisation.
6. I bemoan the state of the UK's Police service due to underfunding and lack of political or public support.
Lucy leftie doesn't like it.
But racist it isn't, and if people like her don't stop abusing the word, it will become meaningless.

As you head to the polls in local elections across England, Scotland and Wales on the 7th May, I believe there is an important conversation to be had about public safety, accountability and leadership.
Too often, serious safety failures only receive attention after a tragedy has occurred. Behind every statistic is a family navigating grief while simultaneously fighting systems for answers, transparency and change.
My No More Falls campaign is calling for:
• Mandatory inspection and maintenance regimes for balconies and external structures;
• Clear accountability where failings are identified;
• Stronger enforcement and oversight mechanisms;
• Greater transparency for residents and bereaved families;
• A preventative approach to safety rather than reactive responses after loss of life.
Local government plays a critical role in housing standards, enforcement, planning, inspections and public protection. These are not abstract policy issues; they have real-world consequences for communities and families.
As you consider your vote, I would encourage you to look beyond populist narratives and ask which candidates are prepared to engage seriously with long-term public safety, regulation, accountability and prevention.
Justice should never depend on how loudly a bereaved family can campaign after the fact.
