As for ipython --pylab, you can look at what we're doing on github.com/fortran-lang/stdl…. You end up with a numpy-like library entirely written and powered by Fortran.

I learnt numerical methods with Matlab. These days, if I want a similar environment, I just
ipython --pylab
On the other side, for the compiled alternative, why not pure C? Or C if more is needed.
