On Wednesday, 35 RDS Members went on a trip to Kilkenny 🚌 We would like to thank @coilltenews and Eoin Wemyss, the local Coillte manager, for welcoming our Members and organising a tour of the Coill an Fhaltaigh woodland 🌳 This woodland won the RDS Native Woodland Conservation Award in 2024 🏆 To learn more about this Millennium Forest, please click here : youtu.be/SAGothvBIoo?si=Es_m… We would like to extend our gratitude to the @ButlerHouseKK for the lunch. The Butler House is the Dower House of the legendary Kilkenny Castle demesne. The house has always been associated with the Butler Family, the Dukes and Earls of Ormonde who resided at Kilkenny Castle for 500 years. & finally to the @DCCIreland who welcomed our Members and organised a tour of the Kilkenny Design Centre and Gallery. The RDS Foundation Craft Programme currently works closely with The Design & Craft Council of Ireland's Future Makers programme, which is the qualifying competition for the RDS Craft Awards providing cash supports for students and emerging crafts & design practitioners. #rdsagri #RDSSpringAwards #RDSMembers #membership #trip

In 1987, the RDS organised the first Forestry Awards Ceremony, known as the Irish Forest & Woodlands Awards which sought to recognise the importance of forestry in the rural and national economy. Today, we continue the tradition of celebrating farmers and woodland owners that have adopted Climate-Smart Agricultural practices on their properties in Ireland. Woolow, Co. Galway, is the 2023 RDS Sustainable Rural Start-up Award Winner 🏆 Founded by Michael Burke, @mywoolpillow, who are based in Dunmore, Co. Galway, produce natural and eco-friendly wool bedding products. Inspired by his childhood experience, Michael created Woolow to provide high-quality sleep solutions using natural and chemical-free materials. Honestly Farm Kitchen, Co. Roscommon, is the 2023 RDS Sustainable Rural Enterprise Award Winner 🏆 @drumanilra Organic Farm located in Co. Roscommon, specialises in pedigree Dexter beef cattle and poultry farming. They prioritise fresh, sustainably sourced, and minimally processed food with short supply chains, aligning with the EU Farm to Fork Strategy. The farm applies various #sustainablemanagement practices. It is certified #organic and uses regenerative farming methods. The farm promotes biodiversity by maintaining natural habitats and uses organic methods to grow salads and vegetables. In their restaurants, ingredients are sourced locally to minimise food miles. They use biodegradable cleaning products and participate in initiatives to reduce plastic waste. Recycling is practiced, and compostable packaging is used. @HonestlyKitchen supports local producers and employs over 75 people. BiaSol, Co. Offaly, is the 2023 RDS Sustainable Rural Innovation Award Winner 🏆 @BiaSolFoods is dedicated to addressing food waste and promoting the #circulareconomy. They produce sustainable food products from by-products and waste streams, with a focus on upcycling brewers' spent grain. BiaSol collaborates with Irish craft breweries to collect spent grain, preventing it from going to landfills where it would emit methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Gerard Collins, Co. Clare, is the 2023 RDS Euro-Star Index Award Winner 🏆 Gerard is full time suckler and sheep farmer in the Burren in Co. Clare. He runs a split calving herd, Spring and Autumn, and use 100% AI. ICBF have nominate Gerard for the Best Beef Cow Award for IE131022160727. She is currently the highest non-pedigree suckler cow in the country, with a Replacement Index of €255. She’s had a calf every year for the last 13 years and is a superb example of an efficient and sustainable suckler cow. Brendan Meade, Co. Meath, is the 2023 RDS Economic Breeding Index (EBI) Award Winner 🏆 Brendan’s farm on the Meath-Dublin border is a model spring-calving system built on good breeding, high grass utilisation and a labour-conscious system. Stamullen Doireann B2123, classified VG 88, was born in February 2013, and is now in her 9th lactation. She has an EBI of €368 and has produced over 65,000kgs of milk to date, giving an impressive 5,567kgs of butterfat and protein.
