One of the World Cup’s big stories.
Irankunda is one of the players in the current Australian team who were born in refugee camps in Africa.
He was born in a Tanzanian refugee camp to parents from Burundi. The guy who celebrated with him in this image, the #9, Mohamed Toure is another.
Mohamed was born in a Guinean refugee camp to Liberian parents. There’s also Awer Mabil, born in a refugee camp in Kenya to South Sudanese parents.
These are the stories that make the World Cup special. You can feel people’s stories. And it doesn’t end with them, there are many others like theirs. Stories of players whose families fled difficult situations to places they now call home.
There are others whose parents moved abroad to make more of their lives and they struggled through depressing situations to fight. Their children are heroes in those nations now.
Such beautiful stories.
