You can do many things with it: RF receiver and SDR testing, pulse generation, amplifier EVM testing, WiFi testing, antenna pattern measurement etc. A hobbyist can survive with tools like RFExplorer signal generator, but if you are serious, you need a serious tool, and this is the most affordable professional vector/signal generator I've found. Here's a QAM1024 signal generated by VSG60A:

I think there's a gap in the RF market for an affordable (and potentially portable) RF signal generator for hobbyist use. The only option was EraSynth Micro. It's discontinued. There's also RFExplorer, but it has many problems including an awful UI. The specs don't need to be crazy. Just copy what EraSynth Micro did. Any other option has some shortcomings (e.g. moRFeus has no amplitude control. Only 0dBm output. And tinySA's output is topped at -18dBm.) And professional options are expensive. I have one from Signal Hound, but something with display would be much handier for quick experiments. Basically, something like tinySA or NanoVNA but for signal generation.

If you could revive a discontinued RF/electronics tool, what would you choose? Here's one of my candidates: EraSynth Micro, a portable RF signal generator with great performance and features for its price point. No good alternative exists for it.

Check its CrowdSupply page. It was sold for ~ $250-280. I'd say it's worth even at a higher price tag. The only alternative is RFExplorer which has worse specs (amplitude accuracy and phase noise) and awful UI. There's a small market for this. crowdsupply.com/era-instrume…

2nd update: did some tests yesterday and today to compare the "power meter" feature against 4 RF power meters, and used 2 different signal generators (RFExplorer siggen combo, and SignalHound VSG60A) Results for a 100MHZ 0dBm CW signal: Anritsu MA24108A: -0.39dBm Mini Circuits FCPM-6000RC: -0.33dBm KC9531B: -0.15dBm GenComm GC747A: -0.23dBm RFExplorer Pro: 1.50 dBm All other devices measure the signal withing a reasonable offset (0.5dBm) except RFExplorer Pro. Already in contact with vendor to find a solution.

DO NOT BUY THIS DEVICE YET!!! My initial tests show the device is very inaccurate in the "spectrum analyzer" and "power meter" modes. Signal generator works good though. I used a calibrated Anritsu MA24108A RF power meter, and a Signal Hound BB60D to compare. As the first test, I simply connected the output of a 100MHZ OCXO (which is known to produce about 7dBm) The Anritsu and BB60D measure the signal very accurately (Anritsu reads 7.22dBm, BB60D reads 7.45dBm) RFExplorer Pro measures 4.75dBm in the Power Meter mode!! Also, in the Spectrum Analyzer mode, it measures the signal as -2dBm !!! The phase noise is also awful. I need to do more extensive tests in the entire frequency range, but for now and based on the initial tests I can say it's way out of spec, and I'm not sure if it will be fixed by future software updates. Will publish more detailed tests, not only for amplitude accuracy in the entire band, but also phase noise.

Newest product from RFExplorer is a very special and unique device: RFExplorer Pro, a new RF multi tool (spectrum analyzer, power meter, cable tester, tracking generator, and Wi-Fi analyzer) covering 15MHZ up to 7.5GHZ. It's running Windows. Display is 8 inches IPS touchscreen. Comes with a protective carrying case. It's very light at 570g (Siglent SHA852A is 3.2kg!) It's still early for me to share a review. I have positive and negative first impressions to share (about the design choices, build quality, accuracy, and also the software) To my knowledge there's still no review of this device, so feel free to ask questions and I will try to test the device and answer them in the upcoming days. Apart from UI/software, I'm particularly going to check the measurement accuracy. One thing is clear though: there's no competition in this price segment: tinySA is small and with many limitations, and portable devices from established brands (Rigol, Anritsu etc) cost a few times more. Probably it won't replace my Signal Hounds, but will come in very handy for field use. Also pictured side by side with tinySA for scale. Price for the base version: €1200 To unlock 7.5GHZ you need to buy a license.

I have both of the TinySA series. The Ultra version is much better. I also have and use from the low cost category the Arinst SSA-TG LC R2 35-6000 Mhz with tracking generator and the RFExplorer 6G Combo 15-6100 Mhz. #SpectrumAnalyser

If you can't find GenComm or don't like it, here's an alternative: 4 devices that you can buy new, which provide similar functionality to GenComm: 1. NanoVNA: an affordable VNA (vector network analyzer). Comes in different models (from 50$ to 1500$) depending on the frequency range, manufacturer, and other features (like dynamic range) 2. tinySA Ultra: amazing little spectrum analyzer. 3. RFExplorer signal generator: 0-6GHZ RF signal generator. 4. ImmersionRC RF power meter: small portable power meter originally built for FPVers. 4/7

Interestingly, GenComm is consistently the most accurate across all frequencies. RFExplorer is usually within spec, but shows weird behaviour in some frequencies (e.g. 2dB higher at 1GHZ 0dBm) All get less accurate in higher frequencies; moRFeus unusually so! 2/3
