Indeed, the old welfare state was designed for the golden age of mass production. We need a complete redesign now for the digital age, and both of @HilaryCottam's books #RadicalHelp and #TheWorkWeNeed can help us get it right

Yes the Aarhus work which is modelled on Life and #RadicalHelp has been extremely successful and has been written up as a European model of 21at century welfare by EU - very proud to have worked alongside colleagues in Aarhus on their brilliant work

They should read #RadicalHelp @HilaryCottam which explains why the NHS needs total reinvention in order to be relevant to issues facing society today (which are very different to those when it was founded e.g obesity, diabetes). #TopTips for @wesstreeting

Thank you to @RoryStewartUK for the shout out @RestIsPolitics [minute 15] Few people are idle, they are struggling to get health appointments and the work economy - the jobs on offer - are brutal. #RadicalHelp
New @RestIsPolitics - Sunak’s performative cruelty on Rwanda and welfare; deep dive on Canada with Trudeau in trouble; what the US package means for Ukraine (and Trump!); exciting news about my new books (more later) AND a new TRIP pod 🇺🇸!! alastaircampbell.org/2024/04…

Some books are definitely worth rereading. #RadicalHelp by @HilaryCottam is one of them. ❤️ It’s stories & messages really resonated when it came out & helped me make sense of why I had left my legal career in Public Law & was drawn to the work of @HelenWBTeam @ProfDonnaHall @caitlinwalkerTA @ImmyKaur @jonjalex & others and the agency, capabilities, relationships & love we have as people, communities and systems to realise the future that is possible. Ive loved rereading (via Audible)this weekend & reflecting on all that’s happened over the subsequent 6 years, what’s changed & what hasn’t, what I’d love to see happen next & how I once again shift my focus to best support. 🌱

#childrenandfamilies priority workshop. Reminds me of #radicalhelp @HilaryCottam. We know what works, we need to embed strengths culture. Is it legal? If so, crack on and make it happen @DrLouiseClarke

Watch this space! We agreed that the system is now so broken that more and more people are hungry for change. We are committed to fanning these flames and will be organising a #RadicalHelp conference in Brighton next year!

Well that opened up a can of worms @HilaryCottam! The newly formed Brighton & Hove Homeless Sector Book Group discussed #RadicalHelp. How can we transform the systems we work in using a relational lens? Turns out we have a LOT of ideas #SocialConnections #Community #WelfareState

thank you @francescabright and club! What an honour to be your inaugural book - I hope you find the relational lens of help #RadicalHelp
Can’t wait for the inaugural Brighton & Hove Homeless Sector Book Group tomorrow when we will discuss Radical Help by @HilaryCottam The book doesn’t specifically look at homelessness so how can we use the principles to find solutions to what seem insurmountable problems locally?

As relational activists we believe that to resist ....means to take risks and be creative in creating space to be relational within a transactional workplace. This has been known as 'relational risk-taking' (Mason 2005) or how about  'relational artistry' (Karen Partridge 2016). It involves working across the 'system world' and 'lifeworld' as defined by Habermas, using craft and active purpose to foster hope and recognise strengths in ourselves and others  (Frank Früchtel). The position of practitioners in the system needs looking at again and again. Hilary Cottam discusses how "a system of protocols has slowly accreted around professionals who care. There is a premium on being dispassionate, on maintaining our distance" ('Radical Help', p74). Frank Früchtel has identified  'megatrends of the helper',  shifts in how  commodifying imperatives have moved from large institutions like post-WW2 European care homes to the 'industrialisation of the worker' and the intimate systems around them, including audit and compliance mechanisms, and technology that necessitates time-bound recording and documenting of risk (Frank Früchtel, 2018). This Wednesday the Video is an appreciation of the brilliant @HilaryCottam book Radical Help. 🚦 Risk vs. Possibility: How to Navigate Challenges in Social Work? #HilaryCottam #RiskTaking youtu.be/4fHWQKGgy7Q #CloserToPeople #RadicalHelp #RelationalActivism

Good choice. I’d also recommend @BeMorePirate by @SamConniff for a revolutionary mindset to better the Education sector and #RadicalHelp by @HilaryCottam to look at revolutionising the juggernaut that is the public sector

Been immersing myself in “system thinking” and how the systems we operate within on a daily basis inter-connect, clash & collaborate with each other. Thank You @JustineBlomeley & @Katherineknig18 for recomending this book!👇 Blew my mind 🤯 #RadicalHelp @HilaryCottam
