'Knowledge is Power': on 11 November 1823, 200 years ago today, 'above 1500 mechanics' assembled to demand the institution of the London Mechanics' Institute outside the Crown and Anchor Tavern, a key site of extra-parliamentary debate on the Strand #RadicalLearning @BirkbeckUoL
ALT 'Knowledge is Power' became the motto of the mechanics' movement, adopted by the Mechanic's Magazine, which started publication in 1823, prior to the foundation of the London Mechanics Institute, today's Birkbeck College.
