UNEXPLAINED PHENOMENA >>> BRAZILIAN WITCHES: Give A Glimpse of the Afterlife In the flickering candlelight of a small house on the outskirts of Salvador, Bahia, a Brazilian witch sits at her low wooden table, wrists heavy with silver bracelets that clink like wind chimes from the spirit world. A red bowl of herbs steams in front of her. A client, a trembling woman, has come because doctors gave her three months. Cancer. Stage four. The Brazilian witch doesn’t speak at first. She closes her eyes, raises her hands fingers splayed, palms glowing in the half-light, and begins to sing in a language that is half Portuguese, half something ancient. The air thickens. The candles bend sideways though there is no wind. Then the room changes. The Brazilian witch swears she sees her dead grandmother standing behind the scared client seeking help. Another unseen presence, tall, faceless, wearing a top hat and smoking a cigar leans over the healer’s shoulder. The Brazilian witch lowers her hands into the bowl, mixes cachaça with guiné leaves and something that smells like gunpowder and roses. She bathes frightened client's head with the liquid while chanting faster. The client gasps; the pain in her liver suddenly vanishes, like someone flipped a switch. Three weeks later the new scans come back clean. The oncologist uses the word “impossible.” The client returns to the little house with a bottle of champagne and tears. The Brazilian witch only smiles and says, “I didn’t heal you. They did.” She points upward, then sideways, then into the smoke. Some call it theater. Others call it the oldest medicine on Earth. The debate rages in newspaper comments and WhatsApp groups: miracle or trick of the light? Science or sorcery? The journalists come with cameras. The skeptics come with questions. The desperate keep coming with everything they have left. And every night, the Brazilian witch lights the candles again, raises her ring-covered hands, and opens the door just wide enough for the living to glimpse the other side.
