Wrapped and ready, all plugged in! 🔌
It’s surreal to see myself in the mirror right now… like a bald man in mascara.
But it’s even MORE surreal to see a smile on my face, instead of fear, discouragement, or hopelessness.
And it’s because of mental health recovery. 🙏❤️
Recovery didn’t give me a life with no problems in it. Obviously.
It did something else.
It handed me the tools to find gratitude, to find acceptance.
It opened my life up to allow the beauty in, even when the tough tests come around.
I wouldn’t trade that for all the healthy brain waves in the world.

Made it to Mayo 🥳
And I just want to give a huge shout out to my parents. They dropped everything, put their lives on hold, to bring me here.
Since being diagnosed with epilepsy, I had the choice to go down one of two roads.
1. I could become bitter, angry at my body for betraying me, I could resent this illness, and resent life for giving it to me. Focus on me, my pain, my limitations. Get mad, get sad, and give up.
Or 2. I could be grateful.
How fortunate to have family to help me. Medical care in a country with some of the best doctors. I’m still breathing, and talking, and moving. I can still love, and people love me.
I’ve been actively choosing the 2nd option. Of course I’m angry to have a limitation I didn’t want. But the gratitude…
The gratitude drowns out the grief. It speaks loudly and clearly. It says “the beauty outshines the ugly.”
And so today as I walk into this big beautiful building, to address the ugly illness of epilepsy, the illness itself isn’t really all that important.
It’s everything surrounding this illness that matters. The gratitude. The beauty in it all.
The ugly has no hold on me today.
