ALT ATTIC RED-FIGURE DISH, C. 450 BCE. MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI NAPOLI This dish shows an unambiguous scene of a man having sex with a hetaira or pornē: in short, a prostitute. His cloak and staff lean against the border of the dish's decorated centre. She is bent forward, both facing right, leaning into a palm tree. Both are naked. She's in the position called "kubda", "bent-over", the cheapest position, worth three obols, that is, half a drachma. It involved the least amount of physical contact, no eye contact, and little effort on the part of the hetaira. As sex was a commodity to be bought and sold, obviously the price varied with the position. The position called "lordō", "bent-back", cost twice as much and involved the penetratee leaning back against the penetrator's chest. The most expensive was the position called "kelēs" or "racehorse", in which the penetratee sat astride the man and rode him like a horse.
