AI doesn’t speak Reference Data well. Its training may include publicly available codes like ISO 3166 Country Codes, and NAICS and NACE Industry Codes. But all the codes that an enterprise has created on its own are not tokens AI possesses. Let’s assume 50% of all semantics of an enterprise’s structured data are in the definitions of tables and columns, and 50% are in Reference Data codes (each code has its own meaning). Then if half of the Reference Data codes were created by the enterprise, 25% of all the semantics of an enterprise’s structured data are missing for AI. I am of course assuming AI can easily get the definitions of the tables and columns. Reference Data, with its structural simplicity and low volumes, continues to be an area that is overlooked. But if people want AI to interact with their databases, Reference Data is likely to need more attention. #ai #referencedata #database #datagovernance

#AI and #referencedata? Yes! Why? Because of tasks like data classification and sentiment analysis during the data preparation phase of an AI project. Think of sentiment analysis – you need to come up with a list of “sentiments” and their definitions – not just for the data prep, but also for user understanding of outputs. And classes of sentiment vary from one context to another (e.g. sporting events vs. shopping). Of course, at this point in the hype cycle our developer heroes and their tech-oriented business sponsors will pay no attention to the governance and management of reference data. But as more and more projects are undertaken, these problems will no longer be containable at CMMI Level 0 by the heroes. Thinking about Data Products and Data Mesh, it seems to me that Reference Data is the data that needs to be the most widely shared in any enterprise – and the data that should be the best productized. And yet, there seems to be little mention of Reference Data in the Data Mesh literature. From my superficial reading, it seems Data Mesh is oriented to what Data Engineers produce. And Data Engineers want nothing to do with managing Reference Data (like many others). But the ideas from the Data Mesh movement do seem to be applicable to Reference Data Management, and that is something we will be pursuing as we build out Codes Centrale - CodesCentrale.com. I know there is some back and forth in LinkedIn about whether the ideas of the Data Mesh will survive, but I do believe these ideas are a good fit with Reference Data. #datamesh #dataproduct #dataproductowner #referencedata #rdm #datagovernance #datamanagement

What is the relationship between a #businessglossary and #referencedata? Many reference data tables are sets of concepts, e.g. Customer Type, Party Role, Transaction Status. The entries in these reference data tables have definitions that must be curated. So, do we do curate these definitions in the reference data tables or in the Business Glossary? We only want to curate the definitions in one place (I hope…). Yes, we should see the definitions in both places, but we have “author-once, publish anywhere” as a principle (or we should have…). Let’s not solution this here, but consider the bigger implication: Metadata Architecture is a capability that is needed, along with Metadata Modeling. Or is it a lot more trivial than this?
