Why isn’t the Ghanaian government prioritizing the takeover of these mining operations directly or through strong state-owned companies?
Minerals belong to the people of Ghana, not foreign firms. The government already has the full legal right under the Minerals and Mining Act to grant leases to itself or state entities, refuse renewals, and run the mines, hiring Ghanaian workers, managers, and engineers.
Key reasons the state should prioritize direct control:
- Maximum revenue retention: Full profits stay in Ghana for roads, schools, hospitals, and development instead of royalties plus 10% free carry being repatriated abroad.
- Sovereignty and resource control: We end dependence on foreign companies that sometimes prioritize shareholders over local communities and the environment.
- Job creation and skills transfer: State operations can mandate more local hiring, training, and Ghanaian leadership to build national capacity in mining technology and management.
- Better environmental and community safeguards: A government-run operation accountable to Ghanaians has stronger incentives for responsible mining, reclamation, and community benefits.
- Economic multiplier effect: Retained wealth can fund industrialization, value addition (e.g., local gold refining), and poverty reduction more effectively.
We’ve seen state mining before, it’s time to learn from past mistakes, build competent institutions, and put Ghana First.
Why the hesitation when the law allows it and the benefits are so clear?
