Angler’s play a key role in conservation, and for every fish you reel in, be sure to use best handling practices. Use a knotless rubber coated net to bring in the fish, wet your hands, and use a dehooking tool. Keep your fingers out of the gills and eyes, and hold the fish horizontally, supporting the belly.
Anglers targeting reef fish, like snappers and groupers, can help improve the survival of released reef fish by properly using a descending device or venting tool that is rigged and ready for use on fish displaying signs of barotrauma. This is just one way our anglers can continue to help conserve Florida’s fisheries for current and future generations.
