On the sixth anniversary of the January 5, 2020 mob attack on students and faculty, a gathering of 30–35 people outside Sabarmati Hostel during “A Night of Resistance with Guerrilla Dhaba” witnessed students raising slogans protesting the Supreme Court’s denial of bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam. JNU Chief Security Officer Naveen Yadav lodged a complaint with Vasant Kunj Police Station, alleging that these slogans were provocative and inflammatory, amounting to hate speech, contempt of the Supreme Court, and violations of campus conduct norms. The complaint further claimed that the slogans posed a risk to public order, campus harmony, and institutional safety, describing the expressions as audible, deliberate, and repeated acts of intentional misconduct rather than spontaneous dissent. The Delhi Police registered an FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 352, 353(1), and 3(5). These bailable and non-cognizable provisions underscore the overreach involved in targeting a peaceful commemoration. Six years after the 2020 violence allegedly linked to ABVP members, as noted by former JNUSU president N. Sai Balaji. No accountability has emerged for the actual perpetrators.
