NCCSALW DG Strengthens Stakeholder Collaboration in Kaduna on Day Two of North West Visit The Director-General of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), Deputy Inspector General of Police Johnson Babatunde Kokumo (Rtd) mni PhD continued his official visit to the North West Zone on Wednesday, 8 April 2026, with a series of strategic engagements aimed at strengthening collaboration with key stakeholders. As part of the Day Two activities, the Director-General paid a courtesy visit to the State Director, Department of State Services (DSS), Kaduna State Command. During the visit, he highlighted the vision, mission, and core functions of the Centre, as well as the provisions of the NCCSALW Establishment Act signed into law in June 2024. He emphasized the need for sustained inter-agency collaboration and intelligence sharing to effectively combat the proliferation of small arms and light weapons and enhance national security. The DG also visited the Commander, Command Engineering Depot, Nigerian Army, Kaduna, where he reiterated the importance of synergy between the Centre and the military. He further solicited support for the use of the Depot’s facilities in the destruction of recovered illicit arms, as part of efforts to ensure safe and accountable disposal. In furtherance of community engagement, the Director-General paid a traditional visit to His Royal Highness, the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamali, at his palace in Zaria. He used the opportunity to brief the Emir and members of the Emirate Council on the mandate and activities of the Centre, while seeking continued support and collaboration from traditional institutions in promoting peace and security. NCCSALW DG Undertakes Strategic Assessment Visit to North West Zone, Strengthens Stakeholder Collaboration The Director-General of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), Deputy Inspector General of Police Johnson Babatunde Kokumo (Rtd) mni PhD, led a high-level delegation on an official visit to the North West Zonal Office from 7–8 April 2026. The visit was aimed at assessing administrative and operational activities of the Zone, as well as strengthening the Centre’s mandate in curbing the proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapons. During the visit, the Director-General emphasized that the proliferation of small arms and light weapons remains a major driver of banditry, insurgency, and other violent crimes, particularly in vulnerable regions. He noted that the assessment was necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of the Centre’s regional structures and enhance operational efficiency. The DG and his team were received by the Zonal Director, North West Zone, Commodore (Navy) Jamil Mukhtar (Rtd), at the Zonal Office in Kaduna, where a comprehensive briefing on the activities and achievements of the Zone was presented. The Zonal Director described the visit as a morale booster for staff and a clear demonstration of leadership commitment to operational effectiveness. As part of the engagement, the DG undertook a series of strategic visits to key stakeholders, including the Kaduna State Government, where he was received by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, representing the Honourable Commissioner. The State Government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting federal initiatives aimed at controlling the proliferation of illicit arms. Furthermore, the DG also paid a courtesy visit to the Air Officer Commanding, Air Training Command Kaduna, Air Vice Marshal Esen Paul Efanga. During the visit, the DG highlighted the vision, mission, and core functions of the Centre, including the provisions of the NCCSALW Establishment Act signed into law in June 2024. He stressed the need for sustained collaboration among security agencies to effectively tackle the proliferation of small arms and light weapons and strengthen peace and security across the North West and the country at large. In his response, the Air Officer Commanding commended the Director-General and his team for the visit and called for enhanced collaboration between the NCCSALW and security agencies in addressing security challenges. The exercise, which involved the destruction of 2,800 retrieved, illicit, unserviceable, obsolete, and decommissioned small arms and light weapons, underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting an arms-free society. Speaking at the event, the Director-General National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, Deputy Inspector General of Police Johnson Babatunde Kokumo (Rtd) mni PhD, emphasized that arms destruction remains a critical component of efforts to reduce the circulation and misuse of weapons, noting that the Centre has destroyed over 16,000 weapons since its establishment. NCCSALW South West Zonal Office Seeks Partnership with Ogun State Ministry of Justice to Tackle Illicit Arms Proliferation The Zonal Director, South West Zone of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), alongside his team, paid a courtesy visit to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ogun State, Honourable Oluwasina Ogungbade, SAN. The visit took place at the Commissioner’s Office, Government House, Abeokuta, on Tuesday, 3 March 2026, as part of efforts to engage critical stakeholders in the fight against the proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW). Speaking during the visit, the south west Zonal Director, Commissioner of Police Mustapaha Alamutu (Rtd) noted that the Office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice play a crucial role in the success of the National Centre’s mandate to curb the proliferation of illicit firearms in the society. He therefore solicited the support of the Attorney General in nominating a resource person from the Ministry for a proposed workshop being organized by the South West Zonal Office in Abeokuta. He also encouraged the Ministry of Justice to ensure strong participation of its staff at the workshop. In his response, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice expressed appreciation to the team for the visit and described the proposed workshop as a welcome development deserving support. He noted that cultism, often associated with the use of arms and drugs, remains a concern in Ogun State. He assured the Zonal Director of the Ministry’s readiness to support initiatives by security agencies aimed at addressing cultism and other security challenges in the state. He further urged the Zonal Director to feel free to communicate areas where collaboration with the Ministry would be required. NCCSALW DESTROYS 1,316 ILLICIT ARMS The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms & Light Weapons (NCCSALW) conducted a successful Arms Destruction Exercise today, 28 August 2025, at Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment, Giri, Abuja. A total of 1,316 illicit arms were destroyed in the presence of key dignitaries, including the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Service Chiefs, the Inspector General of Police, and other top government and security officials. This event marks another milestone in Nigeria’s fight against the proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapons (SALW). The exercise featured symbolic burning followed by controlled smelting ensuring the permanent elimination of these dangerous weapons from circulation. In his keynote address, the NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, emphasized that the proliferation of SALW remains a grave threat to national security, fuelling violent conflicts, crimes, and terrorism. He reiterated Nigeria’s strengthened commitment to global and regional arms control frameworks, citing the recently enacted Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Act 2024 as a critical step in providing the legal foundation for effective arms control. He further called on Nigerians to support security agencies by sharing information and standing united to safeguard peace, stability, and development. Earlier, the Director General of NCCSALW, DIG Johnson Kokumo (Rtd) mni, welcomed dignitaries to the exercise, noting that this is the fifth major arms destruction exercise conducted by the Centre since its establishment in 2021. He highlighted that the destroyed weapons were mopped up from diverse kinetic operations across the country and stressed that the Centre remains focused on its vision of building an illicit arms-free society in line with Nigeria’s national security objectives and international obligations under the ECOWAS Convention and the UN Programme of Action. The 11th RECSA Council of Ministers Meeting and the commemoration of RECSA’s 20th Anniversary successfully concluded last week in Nairobi, Kenya. Over five impactful days, Government Experts, the Technical Advisory Committee, and Ministers engaged in robust discussions, adopted key resolutions, and charted a renewed course for SALW control in the Great Lakes Region, Horn of Africa, and Bordering States. The symbolic destruction of illicit firearms—graced by H.E. President Dr. William Samoei Ruto—powerfully demonstrated our collective commitment. We extend our deepest appreciation to our 15 Member States for their active participation, to our invaluable partners for their continued support, and to the Government of Kenya for their outstanding hospitality.
