After over a decade of research on Quality of Service (QoS) among @Anapaya Systems, @ETH Zürich, and @Mysten Labs, the SIBRA and Colibri systems have been designed. 🚨 We discovered a new attack that can destabilize the Internet’s backbone routing protocol. At the 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘅 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 conference in Seattle, Felix Stöger presented the BGP Vortex: a new attack that traps networks in endless routing oscillations with just three standards-compliant BGP UPDATE messages. ⚠️ Why it matters: • A single BGP Vortex can generate thousands of BGP UPDATEs per second. • These updates ripple across the Internet, overloading routers. • The result: severe control-plane delays and potentially data-plane outages. • Current defenses like BGPSEC or RPKI cannot stop it. • 21 of the 30 largest networks are vulnerable today. 🛡️ Mitigation paths: 👎 Use existing BGP stability mechanisms (e.g., MRAI), but suffer slower convergence even without attacks. 👍 Disable the vulnerable BGP extensions, but sacrifice traffic engineering flexibility. 🚀 Adopt future Internet architectures like SCION, which are fundamentally immune to this attack. This work underscores a pressing reality: as internet routing evolves, capabilities added to BGP can inadvertently enable difficult to detect attacks. 🚀 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗖𝗜𝗢𝗡!🚀 Exciting results from our latest measurements on the 𝗦𝗖𝗜𝗘𝗥𝗔 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸! Across 9 sites on 4 continents and after 280M measurements, we've found that the SCION multipath communication provides low latency and high availability -- in most cases outperforming the Internet. 📊 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆: SCION delivers 18.75% faster response time compared to IP at the 50 percentile mark. In simpler terms, half of SCION’s network pings are completed in under 130ms, whereas IP takes up to 160ms. What does this mean? 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 —- a game changer for critical applications, cloud services, and real-time communications. Thanks to several path options, the latency on one of the SCION paths is likely to be lower than the latency of the single BGP Internet path. Based on a few measurements I made today, I found that the latency from Korea University to ETH over SCION is 24% faster than over the Internet (270 instead of 355ms), and the latency from Korea University to UFMS in Brazil over SCION is 20% lower than over the Internet (400 instead of 501ms). Jeff from @fireship_dev has released an exciting video that shines a spotlight on the inherent issues with BGP (Border Gateway Protocol). Instead of continuing to apply patch after patch to a 35-year-old system—originally designed on the back of a napkin—wouldn’t it be ideal to adopt a clean-slate solution that’s both secure and incrementally deployable (and that is already adopted by major ISPs and research networks around the world)?
