FULL-TIME: Scotland 1-0 Haiti 🏴🇭🇹
History made in Boston.
Captain John McGinn's 28th-minute strike secured Scotland's first World Cup goal and first World Cup victory in 36 years, ending decades of hurt for the Tartan Army and marking a dream return to football's biggest stage.
The goal itself summed up Scotland's bright start. Ben Doak, arguably Scotland's most dangerous player in the opening half, burst down the right before finding Ché Adams. His effort was saved by Johny Placide, but McGinn reacted quickest, smashing home a deflected rebound to send the Scottish supporters into delirium.
A tale of two halves.
Scotland started superbly.
Steve Clarke's side were aggressive, energetic and looked to exploit Haiti's defensive weaknesses through the flanks. Scott McTominay struck the woodwork early on, while Doak's direct running caused constant problems.
But Haiti deserve enormous credit.
Making their first World Cup appearance since 1974, they refused to fold. In fact, they ended the game with more shots than Scotland and repeatedly threatened through their pace and direct attacks. Their final pass and timing of runs let them down, but they showed enough quality to suggest they won't be pushovers in Group C.
The second half became a nervy affair for Scotland.
As fatigue set in, the Scots retreated into a deeper defensive shape and were forced to absorb wave after wave of Haitian pressure. They survived a huge late scare when Frantzdy Pierrot's header drifted agonizingly wide of Angus Gunn's goal.
⭐ The significance of McGinn's goal cannot be overstated:
• Scotland's first World Cup goal since Craig Burley in 1998. • Scotland's first World Cup win since defeating Sweden in 1990. • A moment that will live forever in Scottish football history.
And perhaps most importantly...
🏆 Scotland are TOP OF GROUP C.
With Brazil and Morocco playing out a 1-1 draw earlier in the day, the Scots sit alone at the summit after Matchday 1.
This victory could prove absolutely massive.
In the expanded 48-team format, starting with three points in what many considered their "must-win" fixture puts Scotland in an excellent position to reach the knockout rounds. They now head into clashes against Morocco and Brazil without the pressure of needing a victory to stay alive.
Are Scotland favourites to win the group? Not yet.
Brazil and Morocco remain formidable opponents.
But after one matchday, Steve Clarke's men have given themselves a genuine chance of topping Group C and writing another unforgettable chapter in Scottish football history.
The dream start is complete. 🏴✨
