Most efforts by policymakers to respond to concerns about child safety in digital environments have emphasized “one size fits all” approaches such as bans and access rules.
A more effective approach would acknowledge the opportunities presented by online and mobile access, and prioritize technology design that respects the rights of children while building their trust and agency, according to findings from the year-long Frontiers in Digital Child Safety expert group.
In a new
#SciencePolicyForum, researchers discuss the evidence behind successful digital child safety approaches and recommend future strategies based on fostering trust between children and adults; providing help-seeking and reporting outlets for children; providing on-device supports; and strengthening education and user-interface design so that children become more resilient digital citizens.
