I've spent years listening, to friends, colleagues, students, and family. I've been part of over 500 online communities, hearing countless stories of parents worried about their children's digital lives. Recently, I read a heartbreaking story about a teenager who took her own life, a life tragically cut short by the pressures of social media. It served as a stark reminder of why I'm so passionate about this.
Our digital world can be a beautiful place for connection, but it can also be a minefield. That's why I've dedicated myself to creating practical strategies for staying safe online. It’s not about fearing technology; it’s about mastering it.
Here’s what I’ve learned, and what I want to share with you:
Be Intentional About Your Digital Footprint. Think twice before sharing your location or daily routines, especially if you are a teenager, vulnerable, uncomfortable, in a high-profile role, a parent protecting your family’s privacy, or someone concerned about personal safety. Look at what's in the background of your photos. Every post tells a story, make sure it's one you want the world to know.
Protect Your Peace. When you encounter negativity or trolls, your silence is your strength. Don't engage in arguments. Don't feed the negativity. Use the block and mute buttons liberally. Your online space is yours to curate.
Own Your Privacy. Make it a habit to regularly check your privacy settings on all platforms. Treat your own photos and videos like valuable assets, because they are. You decide who gets to see them.
Guard Your Mental Health. Set boundaries with your screen time. Unfollow accounts that make you feel drained or anxious. If scrolling ever starts to feel like a downward spiral, give yourself permission to log off. Your well-being comes first, always. I recieve thousands of messages everyday, every kind of opportunity, proposals anything.... I only engage with people I trust.
I’ve poured these principles into the attached infographic, all with the goal of making this knowledge accessible to everyone. This isn't just about data or settings; it's about empowering ourselves and our loved ones to navigate the digital world with confidence and safety.
Let's build a safer online community, together.
