Did you know Miss Moneypenny was not the original name chosen by Ian Fleming? When the Bond creator sat down to write his first #JamesBond novel, Casino Royale (published 1953), the name he chose for M's devoted secretary was... Miss Pettavel. He quickly realised his blend of fact and fiction was far too close to reality. The name was crossed out in pencil, and a new name was inserted... Miss Moneypenny. While Fleming never revealed the identities of the individuals he drew upon, many of his ideas came from his time in naval intelligence during #WW2 Miss Kathleen Pettigrew, a trailblazing MI6 woman, was the 'real' Miss Moneypenny. As personal assistant to the wartime MI6 Chief, Stewart Menzies, the loyal 'secretary' received secret correspondence and reports on Fleming's audacious operations. She also accompanied Menzies to early morning meetings with Winston Churchill, and read through decoded German ENIGMA messages from @bletchleypark Late in life, Kathleen Pettigrew declared: 'I was Miss Moneypenny, but with more power.' #HerSecretService #HerStory Daphne Park, Baroness Park of Monmouth (1921-2010), was the FIRST female MI6 officer appointed Controller Western Hemisphere in 1975, the highest post ever occupied by a woman. Her remarkable career spanned over thirty years; she spent time in #Hanoi during the #Vietnam War, smuggled men out of the Congo in the boot of her car, and ran agents in #Moscow. During one interview, the formidable former spy commented: "Licensed to kill? My foot. Brains are far more effective than guns - particularly for a woman. When an intruder tried to break into my house in the Congo, I flung open the window and said, 'I'm a witch, and if you stay a minute longer, your fingers will drop off.' He soon ran away." #CheneyLegacy  A leading figure? Certainly, but not the luckiest. Republican #DickCheney, who died at 84, was the most influential #AmericanVicePresident in living memory. He was an insider in the government machine. Precisely for that reason, Republican #GeorgeWBush chose him as his running mate in the #2000Election. Sources at the time claimed that Bush, then #TexasGovernor, reelected by a landslide, had no intention of running for the #WhiteHouse. Apparently, it was the historic leaders of the #RepublicanParty who urged him to run against Democrat #AlGore.  Bush accepted on the condition -so the story goes – of having a #VicePresident with proven experience. The name was Dick Cheney, who had been #ChiefOfStaff under #Ford, #DefenseSecretary under #GeorgeHBush, and father of #GeorgeWBush. #GeorgeW narrowly won by 250 votes in #DadeCounty, #Florida. So I remember the Republican establishment's appeals to #Austin, Texas, in 2000 to convince the popular governor to run. This is the background to Cheney's nomination. Was it a good choice? In my opinion, no. Cheney is at the origin of an incredible chain of errors.  Here are some: the attacks of #September11, 2001, the conduct of the war in #Afghanistan, the preemptive war in #Iraq. Cheney effectively had carte blanche in the war on #IslamicTerrorism. Under his watch, the #SecretIntelligenceService failed to prevent an #IslamicAttack. More or less what happened to #Netanyahu with the #Hamas massacre of #October7, 2023. Second point. In the war in #Afghanistan, he dusted off the disastrous strategy of escalation. Third point. The weapons of #MassDestruction that had motivated the 2003 invasion were not found in Iraq. That war, the first #PreemptiveWar ever waged by the United States, led to the overthrow of #SaddamHussein. But Cheney could have achieved the same result in 1991, when he was #DefenseSecretary. He did not oppose, or perhaps even agreed with, Bush Sr.'s decision to stop #GeneralSchwarzkopf 50 miles from #Baghdad. Finally, his political contradictions. In the last election, he endorsed not Republican #DonaldTrump, but Democrat #KamalaHarris.
