If a shadow falls on SCP-017, any shadow, from any source, it does not hesitate. The dark mass engulfs whatever cast the shadow completely, sealing around it like an impossibly black void. There is no struggle. There is no sound. It simply tightens, and tightens, and then there is nothing left to tighten around. When it settles back into its shape, whatever it touched is gone. Not dead. Gone. No remains. No trace. No stain on the floor where a living person stood half a second before. The surveillance footage shows only a dark shape folding shut and opening empty. Personnel who enter the chamber wear fully reflective suits. They are forbidden from standing between any two light sources. A single burnt-out bulb activates an emergency maintenance response. A generator failure activates full site lockdown. The Foundation has engineered an entire life support system around a single principle: SCP-017 must never be touched by a shadow again. And SCP-017 is patient. It does not test its containment. It does not rage or throw itself against the glass. It sits perfectly still in the center of a room so bright it burns to look at, and it waits. It has been waiting for years. Every system ever built by human hands has failed eventually.
