You know it’s been a good conference—and an even better conference after-party—when you wake up the next morning and find a photo on your phone that you have absolutely no memory of taking. At some point I apparently became convinced that this was an artfully composed shot worthy of photography awards. Shoes, phone, conference badge, hotel key card… a profound statement about something, I’m sure. This photo is now the only proof I have that I didn’t imagine the whole evening. A quick update: due to an exciting consulting opportunity that requires me back in the U.S., I have to cut my European Security BSides tour short. I’ve already spoken at BSides Vilnius and BSides Kristiansand, and I’ll still be at BSides Leeds today plus BSides Umeå next week (now with 2 talks and a workshop!). Unfortunately, this means I won’t be able to attend BSides Porto. I’m exploring remote participation options and hope to be back with the Porto community in 2027. Spent the day volunteering at BSides Tampa 13 and it was an incredible experience being part of such an amazing cybersecurity community. From helping support conference operations to connecting with professionals, students, and fellow volunteers, it was awesome seeing the passion this community has for learning, collaboration, and growing the next generation of cyber talent. As an Army veteran transitioning into cybersecurity, events like this remind me why I enjoy being part of this field.
