This project originated with a conversation with ChatGPT while I was watching Gold Diggers of 1933 the other day. I generated a few conceptual images and worked with it to come up with a concept for the song. Eventually, I landed on missing love because your face is buried in a screen.
I had ChatGPT research Busby Berkeley numbers to understand the form of the songs, and then wrote some lyrics which I brought into
@suno. A few generations later I had a song I was happy with.
Prompt: 60-second 1930s Hollywood musical revue song, no intro, vocal begins immediately, Sweet 1930s female vocalist, light soprano with gentle vibrato, close harmony chorus girls, mono 78 rpm shellac record sound, soft crackle, foxtrot tempo, lush dance orchestra, muted brass, clarinet, celeste, brushed snare, upright bass, harp flourishes, Romantic novelty torch song with dark irony, like a lost Busby Berkeley number, A glamorous chorus girl sings to the man she has not met yet, longing for love while missing him because she never looks up from the glowing little screen in her hand, Elegant, catchy, bittersweet, innocent on the surface, sinister in the staging
Note: Suno did not stick to the 60-second restriction. Probably because the lyrics I provided required a longer song. The final version was edited down from 3:00 to 2:20.
