When I went in to get the final results of my retirement exam and meet with the doctor, he told me everything looked pretty good then asked me to list the injuries and ailments he couldn't see. I told him I had none - I felt great. He pushed - "You were Airborne - lots of deployments, how about shinsplints? Knees, back pain, migraines? Anything like that."
I told him again that I was fine - none of that applied.
I had obviously heard from other retiring soldiers about the disability games but it never occurred to me to play them. I truly felt great and had no lingering medical issues.
He looked at me and said, "Well you're either the healthiest soldier I've ever had in this office or the dumbest, all things considered."
That was 22 years ago. I can only imagine how those interviews go now.
