When I was in HS we had calculators, but not during a Test.
We could use A Sliderule to make caculations, maybe because you had to learn how to use it

My drafting instructor in college in 1987 was an engineer on a team that worked on designing and developing the A-6!
Super nerdly guy, no show-off stories, just pride in being one of the sliderule guys that created such an iconic aircraft.

I thought the sliderule was a mystery until I realized it’s a printed log scale. Crude but you never have to reboot it.

First day of engineering studies, the kindly Dean gave us an orientation lecture that ended with:
"Go to the bookstore & buy the best sliderule you see - you'll be using it every day for the rest of your career"

I understand the point you're making, but it seems that this will lead to something quite different.
I am old enough to have used IBM punch cards, just missed the Sliderule, programmed in Fortran, wrote documents in Peachtree, and was a spreadsheet jock using Lotus 1-2-3 v. 1 to the sound of 2400 baud USRobotics.
There's something about AI which supersedes (I don't like things which supersede!) the human character.

OMG! I had paper, pencils, pens, a sliderule, and a library with encyclopedias! And a typewriter in high school and college.
