📌 The AU’s Blatant Double Standard:
The African Union (AU) defends its constant interference in Somalia’s domestic affairs by pointing to signed agreements and financial or military aid. They claim that because they help us fight on the frontlines, they have earned the right to micromanage our internal politics, elections, and constitutional debates.
But this is a glaring, hypocritical double standard.
When Ethiopia’s Abiy Ahmed delayed elections and altered domestic mandates, the AU completely looked the other way, hiding behind the shield of "national sovereignty and non-interference." Why does Ethiopia get a free pass on its internal affairs just because it hosts the AU headquarters, while Somalia's domestic governance is treated like a playground for foreign diplomats?
Securing a nation should never mean buying the right to dictate its politics. Financial and military assistance must not come at the cost of our independence.
Our internal disputes, political dialogue, and constitutional future belong exclusively to the Somali people—not to a continental body that enforces rules selectively.
We appreciate the sacrifices made by regional troops over the years. But we are enough.
Our national army is rising, our institutions are maturing, and our patience with foreign overreach has run out.

Statement of the African Union Commission on #Somalia.
The African Union Commission closely followed the high-level negotiations between the Federal Government of Somalia and the representatives of the Somali Future Council, convened in Mogadishu from 13 to 15 May 2026, and expresses concern that these negotiations concluded without a consensus.
The Commission commends the willingness of both the Federal Government, led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and the opposition leadership, to engage in direct and inclusive dialogue in the higher interest of Somalia and the Somali people.
The Commission cautions against the entrenchment of divergent positions and calls upon all political stakeholders to promptly recommit to an inclusive and substantive political dialogue through genuine negotiation, mutual compromise, and strict adherence to constitutional order.
The Commission reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the full implementation of its mandate in Somalia, including through AUSSOM and commends the continued facilitation of the United Nations, the African Union, and bilateral partners. It further encourages sustained and coordinated international diplomatic engagement aimed at reconciling existing political differences in Somalia.

This isn’t mere personal sentiment; it exposes the precise peril Alexander Hamilton described in Federalist No. 57—the danger of representatives who “have but a transient interest” in the people’s welfare. When an official views U.S. taxpayers as a piggy bank for clan-based development abroad (amid her nonprofit’s documented ties to MaineCare overbilling scandals now under federal scrutiny), assimilation has failed. Huntington was right: mass migration without cultural transformation imports clashing loyalties.
Hardworking Mainers did not elect her to serve as Mogadishu’s foreign minister. This is your money, your government, your republic being subordinated.
