Last week, the students in our sponge research course visited The University of Oklahoma's microscope lab, where they got to use their scanning electron microscopes. They imaged gemmules from samples they collected in different places in Oklahoma.

Water is extremely low, so our collections are extremely high! We partnered with the Pearl River Clean Sweep to help with trash collection while sampling sponges! Looking forward to seeing many of you at the sponge conference! #spongeresearch#spongehunters
The Louisiana Freshwater Sponge Lab gave a tour to 15 Baton Rouge Community College Students today. They interacted with student researchers, looked at spicules, and learned about Louisiana Freshwater Sponges!

Well done, Canada!
"#Sponge reefs in British Columbia are essentially living fossils. Individual sponges can survive for up to 450 years, and their communities date back some 9,000 years"
Great example of #spongeresearch used for management & #conservation.
Heroes or villains #sponges are key reef organisms. More #spongeresearch needs to be funded to comprehend all details of their ecology & how ↗️or↘️ their biodiversity might affect marine ecosystems, & ultimately us.
