Happy Real New Year! 🎉
Yeah, I’m sticking with it, April 1st is the true start of the year, not January 1st stuck in the middle of winter.
Back in the old days (Julian calendar era and earlier traditions across Europe and beyond), the new year lined up with the spring equinox, that magical time when nature hits reset: days get longer, flowers bloom, crops start growing, and everything feels alive again. Celebrations often ran late March into early April. It just made sense, a fresh cycle tied to the seasons instead of arbitrary winter dates.
Then the big calendar reforms hit in the 1500s–1580s (France’s Edict of Roussillon in 1564, Gregorian shift under Pope Gregory XIII, etc.). Top-down decision to move New Year’s to January 1 for “standardization,” politics, and easier Easter calculations. People who stuck to the old spring timing, or didn’t get the memo because news traveled slow, got mocked as “April fools.” Pranks, fake news, and jokes followed… and here we are centuries later still doing it on April 1st. Feels like a subtle way the old way got suppressed.
Even on the practical side, it lines up with how real-world cycles work. Many ancient and some modern systems tied financial closes to the end of the “old” year in late March. Think about it: harvest wrapped up, accounts settled after winter, ready for the new growing season. Some places still run their official financial year from April 1 to March 31, a direct echo of that old rhythm where the books close right before the “real” new beginning. January 1st? It cuts right through busy seasons and doesn’t match nature or business flows as cleanly.
So today, let’s embrace the proper reset: spring energy, new goals, and maybe a harmless prank or two. May this fresh year bring growth, good vibes, and wins that actually feel aligned with life. Hopefully the crypto markets reflect this!
