🔴 Just finished studying STATIC ROUTING, and this topic tied a lot of routing concepts together for me. Here’s a clean breakdown of what I learned 👇 🔹 Connected & Local Routes When you configure an IP on a router interface, two routes are added automatically: • Connected route (C) → the directly attached network • Local route (L) → the router’s own interface IP No static configuration needed — the router already knows these. 🔹 What a Static Route Is A static route is a manually configured path telling the router how to reach a remote network. If the destination isn’t directly connected, the router needs explicit instructions. 🔹 How Static Routes Are Defined A static route needs: • Destination network • Subnet mask • AND a way to reach it That “way” can be defined using: ➡️ Next-hop IP address ➡️ Exit interface ➡️ Exit interface next-hop IP 🔹 Next-Hop vs Exit Interface • Next-hop IP tells the router which router to send the packet to next • Exit interface tells the router which interface to send the packet out of • Using both removes ambiguity and improves clarity in some topologies 🔹 Default Route (Gateway of Last Resort) A default route is used when no specific route matches the destination. It’s basically the router saying: “If I don’t know this network, send it here.” This is how internal networks reach the internet. 🔹 Why Static Routing Matters • Full control over routing paths • No routing protocol overhead • Predictable and secure behavior But it also means: • Manual updates • Doesn’t scale well in large networks This made me realize something important: Static routing isn’t outdated... it’s the first step to understanding how routing really works.
