A recent article on divorce got me thinking as it listed these seven things as the top issues in marriage:
1. Career Choice
2. Parenting difference
3. Division of household labor
4. Relationships with family
5. Relationship with friends
6. Finances
7. Health choices
For the last year I have been seeing a lot of couples in therapy for all kinds of reasons. I view this as a good thing. Many major companies are making therapy more available to workers. We are learning as a society that a happy employee is a more focused and productive one.
In the 1980's here is a list of the top reasons people divorced:
• Infidelity (21.6%)
• Incompatibility (19.2%)
• Drinking or drug use (10.6%)
• Grew apart (9.6%)
• Personality problems (9.1%)
It's interesting that "Health Choices" is listed as a recent issue in marriages. There is a lot to unpack here as our health impacts every aspect of our life. More and more our time is spent with AE (Artificial Experiences) impacting our ability to get physical and see things as they really are.
In the 1980's Let’s Get Physical was the song of the decade and escalators were few and far between. Nowadays, the most popular song is Daft Punk’s Get Lucky and we can order food right too our homes. (Maybe someone can help make a connection with Daft Punks song.)
More and more our time is being spent focusing on Artificial Experiences. With our recent trip to London, I was amazed with all the entertainment options in front in the little TV screen to kept me distracted from seeing the realities around me. It was only when we hit air turbulence that my mind was shocked back to reality.
For those recently jolted by life's turbulence into stark reality, I extend an invitation to join me in physical workouts. Physical activity binds us to our immediate environment, providing a respite from many of life's burdensome truths.
While I don't promise that exercise alone can salvage relationships, it does offer potential benefits. Regular exercise is linked to an improved sex life, boosted mood, and heightened performance across life's demands.
