The constant references to Israel’s nuclear weapons while portraying Turkey as the sole threat in the region carry a certain irony. Israel is widely believed to possess a significant undeclared nuclear arsenal — outside the NPT framework. At the same time, it’s worth remembering that Turkey is a large, technologically advanced country with a very capable defense industry, substantial uranium resources, and one of the strongest conventional militaries in the region. In a serious escalation scenario, the possibility that Turkey could pursue its own nuclear deterrent cannot be entirely dismissed either. Both countries have the potential capacity and strategic motivation if they ever felt existentially threatened. This is exactly why saber-rattling and maximalist positions are so dangerous in the Eastern Mediterranean. Threatening or provoking a nation of 85 million with deep strategic depth while relying on “Israel has the bomb” logic is not a sustainable long-term strategy. It only increases the risk that more countries in the region start thinking seriously about nuclear options. De-escalation, realistic maritime negotiations based on equity, and mutual respect between neighbors would serve everyone far better than this cycle of threats and counter-threats. Despite the lack of highly specialized knowledge and infrastructure, Pakistan's nuclear program evolved gradually. - Technical nuances such as plutonium extraction, neutron multiplication, compression, and optimum pressure were not easy to learn with limited resources.
