The 2026 edition of the My LUANAR Challenge has reached over 60,000 secondary school students across Malawi, marking a major milestone in efforts to improve access to accurate and practical information about university education.
The achievement was announced during an award ceremony held at Bunda CALT 1 on 13 May 2026.
Speaking at the event, the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources Deputy Vice Chancellor, Associate Professor Agnes Mwangwela, described the milestone as a significant step forward for the initiative, noting a sharp increase from the 20,000 students reached during its inaugural edition last year.
She commended participating students for taking an active role in promoting the university and extending its reach beyond campus.
“This initiative shows that the responsibility of promoting LUANAR does not rest with one group alone. It is a shared effort. Our students have demonstrated that by taking the message of the university to communities across the country. If we are to reach every corner of Malawi and beyond, it will require all of us to be ambassadors of LUANAR,” she said.
Beyond student outreach, the challenge also recorded wide geographical coverage, reaching 179 secondary schools in 26 districts. Its impact was further amplified through digital platforms, where it generated 5.6 million views on Facebook.
Guest of Honour and motivational speaker, Clara Kamlomo, founder of Amazing B Projects, praised the initiative for bridging the information gap, particularly among students in rural areas.
“Many students, especially in rural communities, have limited access to information about universities. What this initiative is doing is important because it brings that information directly to them. I encourage participants to continue sharing their experiences, because they are in the best position to speak about LUANAR,” she said.
The TAGDev 2.0 program, coordinated at LUANAR by Dr Vincent Mgoli Mwale, announced that the winners would receive cash prizes, with the third position getting MWK 200,000, the second position MWK 300,000, and the first position MWK 500,000.
The My LUANAR Challenge is a student-led outreach and career guidance initiative aimed at inspiring secondary school students to pursue higher education. During school holidays, LUANAR students visit secondary schools within their communities to conduct career talks, share their academic journeys, and provide insight into opportunities available at the university.
At its core, the initiative addresses a critical gap in higher education by providing accessible, relatable, and practical information to students, particularly those in rural areas.
