In 2005, a seismic shift hit the Nigerian FMCG sector. The global acquisition of #Bestfoods, Inc. by #Unilever finally reached Nigerian shores, triggering a strategic "surrender" that would permanently alter the fortunes of two corporate giants. I was at the center of this transition at #Cadbury Nigeria PLC., tasked with the massive technical responsibility of managing the handover of the machinery and engineering spares to Unilever. At the time, Knorr was a "crown jewel" in Cadbury’s portfolio. It was the high-margin "savory leg" of our three-legged stool, alongside #Bournvita (Beverages) and #TomTom (Confectionery). By acquiring Knorr, Unilever executed a brilliant "pincer movement," pairing it with #Royco to squeeze the market leader, #Maggi, from both the premium and mass-market ends. For Cadbury, the departure of Knorr created a sudden loss of portfolio balance. We were left heavily exposed to the volatile cocoa and sugar markets, losing the resilient "kitchen staple" hedge that seasoning provided. In hindsight, the pressure to replace those lost margins was immense. For a lot of us and many industry analysts, we believe this vacuum contributed to the environment that led to the 2006 financial misstatement crisis, where a ₦13 billion overstatement shook the company to its core. It was a stark reminder that when you lose a power brand, the "weight" has to go somewhere. While the boardrooms debated strategy, I was in the trenches ensuring the "tools of the trade" moved seamlessly. My mission was to manage the technical migration of the production heartbeat and was saddled with conducting a forensic-level inventory of specialized production lines and thousands of engineering spares to ensure a fair, transparent, and functional asset transfer. I remembered several meetings with the Unilever team members from Cote d voire, discussing how the technical nuances—the specific engineering "quirks" that kept those lines running at peak efficiency—were to be documented and transitioned to them. Managing this transition was a masterclass in #technicalprojectmanagement and #ChangeLeadership. It taught me that while brands live in the minds of consumers, they are built on the factory floor. Ensuring that the hardware of a multi-billion naira brand moved without a hitch remains one of my most defining professional milestones. To my Cadbury Nigeria PLC. colleagues from that 2005-2006 era—we didn't just move machines; we moved a piece of Nigerian industrial history! #FMCG #EngineeringLeadership #SupplyChain #Manufacturing #Cadbury #Unilever #Knorr #ProjectManagement #NigeriaBusiness #CareerJourney #OperationalExcellence
