National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week
As we wrap up this week of recognition, let’s take a moment to clear up a few common myths about 9-1-1 dispatchers:
🔹 “They’re just phone operators.”
Not even close. Telecommunicators are highly trained professionals, the first of the first responders. Many are certified in Emergency Medical Dispatch and provide critical, life-saving instructions until help arrives.
🔹 “They know everything.”
While they are incredibly knowledgeable, they don’t have all the answers. Their role is to gather information quickly and accurately to get you the help you need.
🔹 “They ask too many questions.”
Every question has a purpose. The information they gather helps ensure the right response is sent as quickly and safely as possible. While you’re on the phone, help is already being dispatched.
🔹 “They can always find you.”
Technology helps, but it’s not perfect. Your exact location may not always be immediately available, especially on mobile devices—so be prepared to provide clear location details.
🔹 “The calls don’t affect them.”
They do. Dispatchers handle stressful, emotional, and sometimes traumatic calls every day. The impact is real, even if it’s not always seen.
The next time you call 9-1-1, remember the calm, steady voice on the other end. Our telecommunicators work around the clock to serve and protect this community, often behind the scenes, but never unnoticed.
Thank you to our Collierville dispatchers for everything you do.
