Really pleased to contribute to @BylineTimes below before the June 11th spending review
Research in my blog with @SiOldridge here substack.com/inbox/post/1653… on the massive costs of CCS
Message for Nov 27th is the same -
#ThinkAgainRachel about burning billions on Carbon Capture
"The £264 billion Price Tag of the UK’s Carbon Capture Strategy."
...a “dangerous distraction” to the real measures required to tackle catastrophic man-made climate change"
And note, 'after extensive lobbying' by Equinor, BP & Exxon Mobil...

Gov often presents carbon capture as being about stopping emissions from existing industry.
But it’s mostly an excuse to burn more fossil gas and wood.
Industrial #CCS makes up a tiny part of the planned spending. Link below.
Rachel Reeves states that a Labour government would invest in 'carbon capture technology' alongside Drax.
Drax is one of the UK's biggest polluters and donated thousands of pounds to the Labour party last year.
Carbon capture and storage (#CCS) just keeps falling - very - short
"Climeworks does not capture enough carbon units to offset its own operations. ... it has captured a maximum of one thousand tons of CO2 in one year"

Lots of bad news in the spending review, today.
Commitment to expand Doncaster Airport and third runway at Heathrow (!!), plus new CCS at Acorn in Aberdeenshire and Viking in Humberside.
Plus it looks like - incredibly - resilience and adaptation are being shat on.

Why Rachel Reeves shld not make further funding pledges to burn gas with #CCS#SpendingReview
🚨 @theCCCuk recommend up to £136bn for power stations burning gas and £128bn for burning biomass with CCS (BECCS) to 2050
MP @melanieonnmp says the new Viking carbon capture cluster is a “game-changer” for the Humber. These clusters are centred around billions in public money for *new* fossil fuel plants—which will be as bad for the climate as coal.
Here’s why 🧵1/6
