This an interesting concept from Natalie Treloar for @ThinkDeterrence. But extended #deterrence is already becoming a challenge in #Europe where it has long been institutionalized. Can the concept be adapted to include domestic #nuclear weapons production for deterrence from #Japan & #SouthKorea as a backstop/fail-safe for underwhelming conventional rearmament embedded within bilateral defense arrangements with the US? In other words the threat of unconventional deterrence to China or #NorthKorea would be an independent capacity the US would not be in charge of. A sort of updated Schelling "The threat that leaves something to chance?" In the meantime, this could strengthen Washington's hand conventionally even with less upgraded forces than would otherwise be needed.
New from NIDS | Indo-Pacific Deterrence Is conventional rearmament moving fast enough to keep pace with the Indo-Pacific threat environment? In a new piece, Natalie Treloar argues that it isn’t—and that an Indo-Pacific nuclear alliance may offer a faster, more credible path to closing the deterrence gap. 📖 Read the full article and join the conversation on the future of Indo-Pacific security globalsecurityreview.com/an-… #Deterrence #IndoPacific #NationalSecurity #NuclearStrategy #DefensePolicy #Geopolitics #NIDS #Strategiccompetition #thinkdeterrence

My latest for @ThinkDeterrence Co-authored with @DrRizwanaAbbasi

CISS Opinion | Expanding collaboration within multilateral forum, particularly on non-sensitive issues like anti-piracy efforts and environmental protection, could help build trust between India and Pakistan. As multilateral engagement deepens, it could serve as a steppingstone toward more focused and issue-specific dialogues between them at a bilateral level. Implementation of the above agreements would provide a structured approach to promote a more secure and stable maritime environment in the IOR preventing miscommunication or misunderstandings and ensuring safety during maritime operations, contributing to greater stability in the IOR. #NNSA is working hard to modernize infrastructure across our enterprise. We are prioritizing investments to deliver on time, incorporate cutting-edge manufacturing, and improve safety. In a recent speech at @ThinkDeterrence, I explained why it matters: energy.gov/nnsa/articles/nns…

Readiness and its links to deterrence are a topic that will be discussed in the next episode of the Deterrence Down Under podcast. #thinkdeterrence
Just to give a sense of the grim reality of our day to day readiness. Only 56%-63% of our vital B-2 bombers are ready to go at any given time. And bear in mind China is preparing for the option of a surprise attack. telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/07…

If you are interested in deterrence, you must realize that economic security plays a critical role. Our efforts to centralize our entire economy is a massive risk and makes for a prime target for our enemies. @ThinkDeterrence
Replying to @untappedgrowth
It takes shutting down 2-4% of US ranches to stop 25-50% of the US beef supply, those feedlots are fairly concentrated by railroads near grain & corn production. Does anyone even know how many railroads would have to be damaged to shut down a lot of these operations? Not many. 6/

@ThinkDeterrence (the National Institute for Deterrence Studies) is a great new think tank, dedicated to education and thinking about strategic issues and deterrence issues. It is well worth it to follow them.
