509 Minor Girls Reported Missing In J&K In 2023, 300 Still Untraced
Minister of State for Home Affairs, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, stated on the basis of NCRB’s Crime in India 2023 data that in 2023, 509 cases of missing girls below 18 years of age were registered in Jammu and Kashmir.
Out of these, 209 girls have been traced/recovered, while investigation is still underway in 300 cases and these are currently classified as “untraced.”
In 2019, 355 cases, in 2020, 350 cases, in 2021, 443 cases, and in 2022, 502 cases of missing minor girls were registered, which shows that hundreds of girls are reported missing every year.
The government also said that for missing children, initiatives such as the TrackChild and Khoya-Paya portals, CCTNS integration, the 1098 child helpline, the 112 Emergency Response Support System (ERSS), and Anti Human Trafficking Units are in place, and states/Union Territories have been instructed to register an FIR immediately in every missing child case and to treat it as a suspected case of kidnapping/trafficking until proven otherwise.
